BMW motorcycles carry their own factory option codes, separate from BMW cars. Here's what they look like and how to read yours.

What BMW Motorrad option codes are

BMW motorcycles are recorded in their own factory system, separate from BMW cars — for cars, see BMW option codes explained. Every option, package and style variant a bike was ordered with has a short code, and the complete list is tied permanently to the motorcycle's VIN.

In the factory records we decode, packages and style variants use codes that start with Q, while individual options start with X.

What else the record tells you

• Model year vs. build date — a bike built late in the year is often sold as the following year's model. One S 1000 RR we decoded was built in August 2021 but is a 2022 model.
• Original market — options such as the language of the operating instructions can hint at the country a bike was first specified for.
• Paint and engine — the factory paint name with its code, and the engine code.
