An advert can list options a bike was never fitted with. The VIN shows what it actually left the factory with.

Why the factory spec matters

On a BMW motorcycle, packages and options change what the bike is worth. Two R 1250 GS Adventures can look alike in photos yet differ by the Comfort, Touring and Dynamic packages, Dynamic ESA, Gearshift Assistant Pro or Keyless Ride. Some parts can also be added later as accessories, so what is on the bike today is not always what it was built with.

What to check against the advert

• Packages — whether the Comfort, Touring, Dynamic or Race package the advert mentions was fitted at the factory
• Suspension and electronics — Dynamic ESA, Driving Modes Pro and Gearshift Assistant Pro
• Comfort and security — heated grips, cruise control, Keyless Ride and the alarm system
• Year and origin — the production date, the model year and the market the bike was first specified for

How to check a BMW motorcycle by VIN

Ask the seller for the 17-character VIN from the registration document and check it before you view the bike. You get the bike's decoded factory option codes as a clear list you can hold up against the advert.
