Used EV Check by VIN: Battery Size and Heat Pump Codes
On a used electric car, the battery and the heat pump decide range and winter comfort — and you cannot see either on a test drive. The factory record shows both.
Why battery size and the heat pump matter
Two cars with the same badge can have different batteries, and a bigger battery means more range. A heat pump heats the cabin with less energy, which helps range in cold weather. Both are factory options, so an advert can easily get them wrong.

- J9C — 62 kWh gross (Volkswagen ID.3, CUPRA Born, Škoda Enyaq)
- J9D — 82 kWh gross (Volkswagen ID.4, Škoda Enyaq, Audi Q4 e-tron)
- J9Z — 84 kWh gross (Škoda Enyaq, Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5)
- J9T — 95 kWh gross (Audi e-tron, Audi Q8 e-tron)
- J9G — 100 kWh gross (Audi Q6 e-tron, Audi A6 e-tron, electric Porsche Macan)

Heat pump codes
On Volkswagen Group cars the heat pump is usually code 9M3, and on a Volkswagen ID model the record can list WPU as well. On a Mercedes-Benz EQE or EQS, the heat pump is code 583. On a Porsche 911 or Cayman, however, the same 583 means smoker package — so always read a code together with the brand and model.
What to check before you buy
Ask the seller for the VIN, compare the battery code with the advert, and look for the heat pump if you drive in a cold climate. The record lists the options the car was built with, so you can see whether a heat pump is among them.
